Requirements

2+ years of tech lead experience

7+ years of full stack web development including building for other developers

Experience building, operating, and monitoring complex, performance-critical web systems at scale in GCP or AWS

Expertise with the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem, including:

One or more Node.js frameworks (such as Express or TanStack)

One or more frontend JavaScript frameworks/libraries (such as React SSR, Vue, or Svelte)

Responsibilities

The New York Times is searching for a Staff Software Engineer with deep experience in the web ecosystem for the Web Platforms team. We're looking for someone who values collaboration and learning with an interest in building web tooling for engineers across multiple product feature teams. You'll contribute to a central team in an organization that values empathy, collaboration, transparency, diversity, and learning. This is a hybrid remote/in-office role.

Our internal platform also includes a core monorepo, common components and libraries, observability and performance tooling, CI/CD, test automation framework, infrastructure, and security. We are accountable for improving the developer experience, performance, and resiliency of our web applications. Our primary technologies include React, Node, TypeScript, and GraphQL.

You will report to the Engineering Manager of Web Platforms. This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters.
