Toronto General Hospital
As a member multi-disciplinary Team, the Registered Nurse practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, the UHN Professional Practice Model and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN to provide compassionate, collaborative and competent care, while meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession.
Following surgery, patients are transferred to the Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) for immediate post-operative care and remain there until they are ready to be transferred to the next stage of their recovery.
PACU is a critical care environment, with 20 physical beds and the capability for full invasive monitoring and ventilation. Several types of anesthesia are provided to our patient population including local anesthesia with sedation to more complex regional and general anesthesia.
The PACU facilitates postoperative recovery for approximately 7,500 patients per year. The majority (90%), are high acuity in-patients undergoing high risk surgery while the other 10% are patients undergoing same day surgical procedures, or people that are booked for procedures such as ECT or Cardioversion/ Defibrillator testing. Patients who have had interventional radiology procedures, trans esophageal echocardiograms (TEE) or gastroscopies are also cared for here.
The PACU’s dynamic interprofessional team works collaboratively to provide exemplary patient centered care to our patients and works diligently to create a cohesive team environment.
